The Early Years

In many countries, most children  start formal schooling when they are about seven years old.    Before that, they attend kindergarten  or nursery school classes.     The  kindergarten programmes  may be provided by the government or private institutions.  They are designed to  help children become independent,  solve problems and get along well with their peers.

Friedrich Frobel was a German teacher  who  spent many years teaching in Switzerland. Later, he developed his own method of teaching young children.  He  put it into practice when he opened  a school in Germany  in 1837. He called the school a kindergarten or ‘children’s garden’. Consequently, he was known  as the father of kindergartens.   The children  in his kindergartens played games, listened to stories and sang songs.

Maria Montessori,  an Italian doctor, developed another method of teaching young children.  She encouraged the children in the schools she established to gain independence by doing things for themselves,  such as buttoning their shirts and tying their shoelaces.  They were also taught to keep the classroom neat and clean. Montessori believed that the use of our senses was crucial to the development of children. For example, to learn the English alphabet, the children  in her schools traced the sandpaper outlines of all the letters with their fingers.

Another method of teaching young children,  known as the progressive method, was developed by an American, John Dewey. He also believed children learn by doing things for themselves.
