密歇根州是美国的一个州，位于五大湖地区。这个州作为汽车工业的诞生地而闻名。其邮政缩写是MI。由两大半岛组成，分隔两半岛的水面叫做麦基诺水道。南为下半岛，是该州的主体，面积较大。其南境西半部接印第安纳州;东半部接俄亥俄州。半岛西、北、东3方面均滨湖：西、北为密歇根湖，东北为休伦湖，东为圣克莱尔湖与圣克莱尔河，东南是伊利湖。北部为上半岛，面积比下半岛小，北滨苏必利尔湖，南临密歇根湖，西南邻威斯康星州，东端为圣马里斯河及苏运河。全州湖岸线长达5000公里。
密歇根州有超过三十所以上的大学院校，以及二十九所社区学院。
其中最为著名的是位于安娜堡的密歇根大学。这所学校不仅是密歇根州最好的学校，也是全世界知名的顶级大学。它开设有大约200个专业，其中有四分之三的专业在美国排名前十。它的罗斯商学院的实力和声誉不亚于哈佛大学的哈佛商学院、宾夕法尼亚大学的沃顿商学院、麻省理工学院的斯洛安商学院等著名商学院。它的法学、文学、工程类、地球科学类、音乐艺术类专业也都是美国的头牌。2013年美国新闻列出的世界大学排行榜里，密歇根大学位列全球第17位;而QS的世界大学排行榜里密歇根大学排名全球第14位。
