加拿大移民部部长在4月18日宣布了有关留学生在加拿大工作政策的最新决定：
1)在公立大学和学院学习的留学生，在学习期间，可在校园外打工(以前是只能在校与内工作)。
2)留学生在加拿大大学完成学位后，可在加拿大合法工作两年(以前是一年)。
3)留学生从一所加拿大大学和学院转到另一所加拿大大学和学院，不再需要重新申请学生签证。
4)在中学读书的留学生，可获取比以前更长的学生签证。

OTTAWA,April18,2005—TheHonourableJoeVolpe,MinisterofCitizenshipandImmigration,ispleasedtobuildonthesuccessofCanada’sinternationalstudyprogrambyannouncingnewinitiativestobetterattract,integrateandretaininternationalstudentsinregionsthroughoutthecountry.
Inpartnershipwithprovincesandterritories,CitizenshipandImmigrationCanada(CIC)isexpandingtwopilotinitiativestohelpmakeCanadaadestinationofchoiceforinternationalstudents.Thefirstwillallowinternationalstudentsatpublicpost-secondaryinstitutionstoworkoff-campuswhilecompletingtheirstudiessothattheycanexperiencetheCanadianlabourmarketandgainawiderunderstandingofCanadiansociety.Thesecondwillallowstudentstoworkfortwoyears,ratherthanoneyear,aftertheirgraduation.ThissecondinitiativewillapplyoutsideMontréal,TorontoandVancouvertohelpspreadthebenefitsofimmigrationtomoreofCanada’sregions.
ThroughpastpilotprojectsandagreementswithCIC,someprovinceshavealreadyexperiencedthesuccessoftheinitiatives,whicharenowbeingexpandedthroughoutCanada.TheGovernmentofCanadaisinvesting$10millionayearforfiveyearstosupportthisannouncement.
“WehavebeenlisteningtoourstakeholdersandarecertainthattheseinitiativeswillhelpincreasetheglobalcompetitivenessofCanadabyattractingandretainingmoreinternationalstudentstoourschools,”saidMinisterVolpe.“InternationalStudentswhochoosetostayinCanadaaftertheygraduategreatlycontributetoourlabourmarket.ItisimportantthattheybeexposedtotheCanadianworkforceatanearlystagetoincreasetheirchancesofsuccessfollowinggraduation.”
“WhethertheychoosetostayinCanadaorreturntotheirhomecountry,theywillhaveacquiredCanadianexperienceandvaluesthatwillenrichtheirlives.TheywillalsospreadthewordaboutthequalityofeducationCanadahastooffer,”addedtheMinister.
CIChasalsomadeotheradjustmentstoitsinternationalstudyprogram.Forexample:
Post-secondaryinternationalstudentscannowtransferbetweenprogramsofstudyandinstitutionswithoutapplyingforachangetotheconditionsoftheirstudypermit.
Secondary-levelinternationalstudentscannowobtainlongerhigh-schoolstudypermits.
AsofMay16,2005,internationalstudentswhomeettheeligibilitycriteriaforasecondyearofpost-graduationemploymentwillbeissuedatwo-yearworkpermit.Forthesestudents,thetwo-yearworkpermitwillonlybevalidforoneyearsincetheywillhavealreadycompletedtheirfirstyearofpost-graduatework.
Aswithexistingpilotprojects,theoff-campusworkinitiativewillbeimplementedbilaterallyineachprovinceandterritory,followingagreementswithCIC.
